When people think of first-person shooter (FPS) games, Call of Duty is almost always synonymous with FPS gaming. COD has been a juggernaut for FPS console gaming for better or worse. However, in February 2011, DICE (EA Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment) revealed working on Battlefield 3, which sent a shockwave through the gaming community. For the first time since 2005, they released a direct sequel to Battlefield 2, one of the greatest FPS games of all time. Not only was Battlefield 3 highly excited, but it came out a week before Modern Warfare 3. It quickly became a Battlefield. vs. Call of Duty competition for FPS supremacy. This became an indirect message to Infinity Ward that their rule as the kings of FPS games was being challenged and possibly ending after four years.
Graphics, sound and setting:
Battlefield 3 takes place in the short term and is primarily a multiplayer game, but does have a single-player campaign mode. In the single campaign, you take control of various military operations, such as a Force Recon Marine, a Russian spec ops officer, an F-18 fighter pilot, and an M1A2 tank operator. The storey of Battlefield 3 is surprisingly interesting and engaging. There are many twists and turns as you progress through the story. The story’s main themes are an upcoming war in 2014 stretching from Iran to France. Battlefield 3 combines the action and storey well. All in all, Battlefield 3 has a solid single-player story.
While the storey is solid, the graphics are a big question that many people wonder about. When DICE presented Battlefield 3 at gaming conventions, the phenomenal The images of the tank and sand from Kirkland were of a level of detail that hadn’t been seen in any other game before.
However, all that footage was pre-rendered and expected to look good. When placed in a real-time setting with thousands of changing variables, did BF3 deliver the same amount of intensity and rich realism to its graphics as its predecessor? Battlefield is also simply a beautiful game. DICE put $100 million into marketing, and it’s clear they wanted to show off a product they’re proud of. The Battlefield 3 graphics were created on a new Frostbite 2 engine and a new character animation technology called ANT. The freezing engine allows the game to develop immense details, dynamic shadows, and smooth textures in a large environment while it’s all destructible. The ANT character animation is incredible; each soldier looks incredibly realistic with facial expressions that change as the action heats up.
The single-player campaign in Battlesingle-player takes place in many locations, including Iran, New York, and Paris. Most areas are urban with many buildings, and DICE did a great job of adding clear details to each site. There are many vibrant colors, and Battlefield 3 has great distances.
The graphics in the multiplayer maps are also very impressive. There are nine main maps, not including the downloadable content. These maps are Caspian Border, Damavand Peak, Grand Bazaar, Kharg Island, Noshahr Canals, Operation Firestorm, Operation Metro, Seine Crossing, and Tehran Highway. Each of these cards has its unique elements and style. DICE did a great job of making the multiplayer experience different on each map. Caspian Border is a wooded map, which is very large. It contains buildings and forests and is excellent for sniping and using vehicles. Damavand Peak is set in a dark and rainy marketplace. Kharg Island is located on a rocky island and has an ocean. Mosher Canals takes place in an industrial area with several canals you.
The Seine Crossing is a brightly coloured map focused on Paris. The Tehran Highway is the last main road on the map and is concentrated in an urban area in Iran at night. Overall, the graphics in Battlefield 3 are exceptional, from the single campaign to the various multiplayer maps; there is a lot of variation in each map graphically.
The sound in Batt’s home is some of the best sound quality I’ve ever heard from a game. Every bullet that whizzes by sounds sharp and realistic, and if you’re good enough, you can pinpoint where it came from. The tanks, jets, and other vehicle sounds are amazingly realistic. The voice acting is fantastic, and you feel like you’re part of the action. The game also includes an official soundtrack of 19 songs composed by Johan Skugge and Jukka Rintamki. The sound in Battlefield 3 is very impressive. Overall, the graphics in Battlefield 3 are exceptional; from the single-player campaign to the diverse multiplayer maps, each map visually varies a lot.

Gameplay and controls:
The controls for Battlefield 3 are your standard first-person controls. They can be adjusted, but the default is to press L1 to aim and R1 to fire; the analogue stick does move the camera with the right analogue stick. You can sprint by holding down the analogue stick. Pressing the triangle allows you to switch weapons; the circle is used to interact with objects in the environment; the square is used for reloading or picking up a gun; and the X button is used to jump. The right and left diagonal buttons are used to switch between technologies you have; the up button is used to switch between laser sight and down to switch between firing modes such as automatic and burst fire. The R2 button provides a fast blade, while the L2 throws a frag grenade. The controls are easy to learn but difficult to master. Knowing the rules for piloting a tank or flying a jet fighter can be confusing at first and has a small learning curve. Overall, the controls are fantastic for Battlefield 3.
While the graphics, great sound quality, and intercepting storey are all-powerful and lay the foundation for a game. None of these things fit the most important part of games. The gameplay is the heart and soul of games. DICE had a bold job of creating gameplay that would be fast, exciting and, intense enough to knock Call of Duty off its throne as the console gaming king. The team at DICE has delivered in many areas but also came up short in quite a few.
Battlefield 3 uses the Frostbite 2 engine. This engine allows for fully destructible environments, advanced physics, and real-time grandiosity. All of these things mean that Battlefield 3’s physics and graphics have been vastly improved compared to just about every game before it. Bullets can penetrate walls seamlessly. The front wall of a building can be blown open by a tank shot. A grenade can send debris flying everywhere when detonated. Battlefield 3 is one of the most realistic FPS games out there. So many things can happen, but the frostbite two engine streamlines them and makes the game run smoothly by rendering textures quickly. This allows the action and excitement to take place without any delay. There are three game modes in Battlefield 3: the single-player campaign, a co-op mode, and the multiplayer mode.
The single-player looks great and has many different locations, but it can get repetitive. The fact is that Battlefield 3 is primarily a multiplayer game. The single-player campaign is a good way to learn the basics before going online or co-op, but it doesn’t offer real replay replayability also have been nice to see Battlefield 2’s offline map mode where you can play with bots. However, Battlefield 3 does not provide this.
You can team up with a player online in co-op mode. 6. In each mission, there are several objectives that you and your partner must complete. Co-op can be a lot of fun when you play with a friend, but Battlefield 3 doesn’t offer split-screen co-op. This can be a problem if you have friends, because you can’t play together unless you have 2 PlayStation 3s.
The multiplayer mode is the main attraction of the game. In Battlefield 3, there are six multiplayer game modes: Conquest, Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, Conquest Domination, and Squad Rush. Each game mode serves a different purpose, and playing each midway through the multiplayer experience is put together. Some game modes require meticulous teamwork, while others can be done individually. The Conquest game mode is the classic Battlefield 3 game mode, in which two teams fight on a large-scale map for control of different bases. This game mode is best suited for teamwork and vehicle warfare. Conquest is still the best game mode, in my opinion. It’s exciting, and you have different ways to pinpoint it in a rush; there are two teams. One team tries to attack and destroy an M-COM station, while the other defends it. Squad Rush is essentially the same, but in a more private environment. Team Deathmatch is another classic mode where you are part of a 12-person team versus another 12-person team. The goal is to kill as many enemies as possible and get a set number of kills as a team. In this mode, there are no vehicles, and it’s just about going out with guns shooting, and killing as many people as possible. Squad Deathmatch is the same as Team Deathmatch, but instead of 2 teams of 12, 4 teams of 4 people compete against each other to get a certain number of kills. Conquest Domination has two groups of 8 people fighting in a close location. It’s similar to Conquest, essentially the same except that.’
When you select a game mode, you are given 4 classes to teleport between. There is the assault class, which is the infantry soldiers and the medics. If you choose Assault, you can collect kills and bring dead teammates back to life. The Engineer class can repair vehicles and transport rocket launchers to take out other cars. The Support class is a class that supplies others with ammunition and also carries heavy weapons capable of killing many enemies. Recon is the last and final class, and they are the snipers in the game. Recon is useful for taking out opponents from a distance.
Battlefield 3 places a huge emphasis on teamwork and squads. Each class has significant strengths and weaknesses, and being able to use them all to succeed and win is significant. If you participate in a conquest game or other game mode, you will be placed in a squad. Developing tactics and picking the right classes for the right situations is what sets Battlefield 3 apart from other first-person shooter games. Battlefield 3 has VOIP support, which means you can communicate with your teammates through a headset and includes in-game messaging. Battlefield 3 is a solid game when played without other friends, but it is simply one of the best games ever made with friends. This game thrives on teamwork.
One of the problems with this game is the cards. The same maps that are very detailed can get very annoying because they are very large. You can go for minutes without fighting, and health is easily depleted. It is very easy to die in this game when you first start. Another big problem is all the downloadable content. You are not required to buy DLC, but the game does feel empty without having all the cards and items. The DLC could bring the $60 price tag for Battlefield 3 up to $125. A big problem with BF3 is that you need an online pass for this game. New games come with online access, but used games don’t. An online key can only be used once, and buying a new one costs $10. This was done to boost sales, but it detracts from Battlefield 3’s resale value.

Battlefield 3 does a lot of things. The graphics are incredible, the sound quality is excellent, and the multiplayer is very diverse and exciting. However, it also lacks in many areas. There is no split-screen co-op, no replayability in the single-player campaign, no offline maps, expensive DLC content, and gameplay that can get repetitive over time, leaving so much to be desired. After all, Battlefield 3 isn’t the revolutionary game that was hailed when the first few minutes of footage were revealed. At the same time, it’s certainly not a bad game. When you buy Battlefield 3, you get a solid, finely crafted first-person shooter. It’s similar to Call of Duty in the FPS aspect, but the squad-based system, vehicles, and large maps make it a very different experience. I would highly recommend buying Battlefield 3; it’s one of those games that you keep coming back to. Battlefield 3 is a solid game and an absolute buy for PlayStation 3 owners. I give it a 9/10.
